Say goodbye to plaster and fibreglass casts!
If you have fractured your wrist or forearm, being told you need a cast can feel like a big interruption to daily life. Showering becomes a hassle, swelling changes the fit, and the whole thing can feel heavy and uncomfortable.
At PhysioCentral in Miranda, we offer the EXOS thermoformable bracing system as a modern immobilisation option that may be appropriate for selected wrist and forearm injuries, based on your medical guidance and imaging. EXOS is designed to be lightweight, waterproof, adjustable, hygienic, and X-ray compatible.
We fit EXOS braces for patients in Miranda and across the Sutherland Shire who need wrist or forearm immobilisation where medically appropriate.
PhysioCentral, Level 3, 14–16 Central Road, Miranda NSW 2228.
A Referral is not required to book an appointment. Most people come to us with an X-ray report, hospital discharge notes, or a GP or specialist letter that outlines the injury and the recommended period of immobilisation. If you are booking under an insurance claim (for example Workers Compensation or CTP), bring your claim details and any required paperwork.
What is an EXOS cast?
EXOS is a custom moulded fracture brace. We warm the brace until it becomes flexible, then shape it directly to your arm. As it cools, it becomes rigid again, forming stable support around the injured area. One of its key advantages is that it can be re-moulded if needed as healing progresses.
Why people prefer EXOS over traditional casting
For suitable injuries, EXOS is often chosen because it is designed to be more practical day to day:
- Waterproof, making hygiene and showering easier
- Adjustable fit using the BOA system, which can help accommodate swelling changes
- X-ray compatible, meaning follow-up imaging can often be done without removing the brace
- Designed for improved hygiene and easier cleaning
- Removable in appropriate cases, allowing skin checks and cleaning, only when your doctor allows
- Re-mouldable, so it can be reshaped if required during recovery
Is EXOS suitable for every fracture?
Not always. Some fractures still require traditional casting or orthopaedic management. EXOS is typically considered for stable, non-displaced, or minimally displaced injuries requiring immobilisation via casting. Luckily, these are far and away the most common type of fractures people present with.
Common examples your doctor or hospital may refer for include:
- Non-displaced or minimally displaced distal radius fractures
- Non-displaced distal ulna fractures
- Green Stick or Buckle fractures of the wrist or forearm, which are common in kids
- Selected stable wrist and forearm injuries where bracing is appropriate, such as a severe wrist sprain.
If you are unsure whether EXOS is suitable for you, you can still book in without a referral. Just bring any X-ray report, discharge summary, or letter you already have so we can follow the recommended management and timeframe.
Caring for your EXOS brace at home
Although EXOS is waterproof, it still needs sensible care. Avoid high heat exposure, such as very hot water, heaters, or prolonged heat in a car, and ensure the brace and skin are dried thoroughly after getting them wet.
- Dry skin and brace thoroughly after water exposure
- Avoid high heat (hot water, heaters, hot car)
- Contact the clinic if rubbing, skin irritation, or increasing tightness occurs

EXOS casting FAQs
Can I shower with an EXOS brace?
Often yes, but follow medical advice and ensure the brace and skin are dried thoroughly afterwards.
Do I need a referral to book in?
No. You can book in directly without a referral.
Many people arrive with an X-ray report, hospital discharge notes, or a GP or specialist letter because imaging has already been organised and immobilisation has been recommended. If you are booking under an insurance claim, bring your claim details and any required documents.
Do I need an X-ray before I book?
No. You can book in with us even if you have not had an X-ray yet. If you are unsure whether imaging is needed, we can assess your wrist and arrange an X-ray referral if appropriate.
At-home checks that suggest you should be assessed (and may need an X-ray):
- You cannot gently weight-bear through the hand (for example, leaning through your palm on a table) without causing sharp pain
- You cannot move the wrist through about half of it’s normal range compared with the other side
- Heaps of swelling or bruising, especially if it came on quickly
- Pain that makes it hard to grip, lift a light object, or use the hand normally
- Tenderness in the hollow at the base of the thumb after a fall onto the hand
- Numbness, tingling, or fingers that look pale, blue, or feel cold (seek urgent care)
If you are unsure, it is still worth being assessed. Some wrist injuries can be subtle early on and may need follow-up if symptoms persist.
Is a broken wrist different to a fractured wrist?
No. In medicine, a “fracture” means a bone is broken. “Broken wrist” and “wrist fracture” are two ways of saying the same thing. People often use “broken” in everyday language, while doctors and radiology reports use “fracture”.
Fractures can vary in severity, from a small crack or buckle fracture to a more displaced break that needs different management. If you are unsure, we can assess your wrist and arrange an X-ray referral if needed.
Can you do an X-ray with it on?
EXOS is designed to be X-ray compatible, so follow-up imaging can often be done without removing it.
Can it be adjusted after swelling goes down?
Yes. The fit can be adjusted, and the brace can easily be remoulded if required. We can do this for you at no extra cost!
Is it removable?
In appropriate cases, it may be removable for hygiene and skin checks, but only if your doctor or we allow it. If unsure, we can always check with your GP or Specialist (for more complicated fractures) on your behalf. Better safe than sorry!
