What Are Dietetic Services?
Dietetic services involve the application of nutrition science to help individuals make informed food and lifestyle choices. At PhysioCentral, our dietitians aim not only to provide personalised nutrition advice but also to address the root causes of your health concerns to promote long-term well-being.
There’s a commonly held view that dietitians are the ‘food police’, whose main role is to take away your donuts, burgers, and beer. Our dietitians—Maddi and Sophia—bring a fresh new perspective. Under their guidance, you’ll soon form simple, achievable, and realistic goals.
It’s not all about how much you weigh! The focus is on improving your health. The rest looks after itself.
How Can Our Dietitians Help You?
Our dietitians can help with different aspects of your well-being, such as:
- Improved energy levels
- Better sleep
- Enhanced sports performance
- Managing medical conditions (e.g., chronic pain, diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, anaemia, allergies)
- Optimising nutrient blood levels (e.g., calcium, iron, B12)
Reasons You Might See a Dietitian
Some reasons you might be referred to or want to make an appointment to see one of our dietitians include:
- Managing a food allergy or intolerance
- Newly diagnosed chronic disease
- Poorly managed chronic illness
- Significant weight changes
- Recent poor food intake, appetite loss, or difficulty eating
- Changes in medication
- Accelerated recovery from injury
- Optimising sports performance
- Managing a healthy body weight
- Improving your relationship with food
What to Expect When You See a Dietitian
A consultation with a dietitian is very different from a visit to your GP. Appointments usually last around 45 minutes (or longer for some health conditions), ensuring ample time to delve into your health issues or concerns in great detail.
Our dieticians will assess all factors influencing your nutrition. They’ll take the time to get to know you, asking a variety of questions to thoroughly understand your health. Topics may include your eating habits, food intake, lifestyle, digestion, and any symptoms of concern.
Personalised Nutrition Plan
Based on your personal goals, our dietitians work with you to develop a plan and provide a tailored nutrition education package. Maddi and Sophia’s goal is not to tell you what to do but to collaborate with you to make realistic and long-lasting changes.
Depending on your situation, this education could include:
- Explaining the science of your health condition and how food can influence it
- Discussing how certain lifestyle factors impact your health
- Collaborating to create a realistic and achievable plan for change
Before Your Appointment
Do I Need to Do Anything Before the Appointment?
Once you’ve booked your session, we’ll send you an intake form to complete before your appointment. This helps us understand your goals and ensures you get the most out of your time with us.
Depending on your needs, we may also ask you to complete a 3-day food diary prior to the appointment. This provides insight into your nutritional intake and dietary patterns.
What Should I Bring?
Consider bringing the following to your first appointment:
- Your GP care plan (if applicable)
- Medicare card
- Private health card
- A list of medications or supplements you’re taking
- Recent medical or blood test results
- Any questions you may have
After Your Appointment
What Happens Next?
You’ll receive written information and resources on the dietary changes needed to achieve your goals, allowing you to take immediate action. A follow-up appointment is recommended to track your progress and adjust your plan as needed.
Changing your diet can be challenging, with ups and downs along the way. With support and simple adjustments, our dietitians will help keep you on track.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of sessions varies per individual. Generally, at least two sessions are needed to set you on the right path. For long-term changes to your diet, health, or weight, more sessions may be beneficial. Feel free to discuss this with our dietitians—they’re here to support you.
Many patients choose to check in regularly to maintain and reinforce their dietary improvements.
Will I Receive a Meal Plan?
While meal plans can be helpful, they often are rigid and restrictive. Instead, our dietitians focus on building your knowledge and skills to make healthy food choices that align with your goals. However, if you prefer more structure, you’re welcome to download our free meal planning and grocery template below to simplify healthy eating in your busy schedule.
