Massage Therapy

“What is the difference between ‘remedial’ massage, ‘sports’ massage and just a regular massage?”

There may be a lot of terminology thrown around which can be a little confusing… but essentially, if you’re new to massage, we’ll personalise the treatment based on what you need (and want) it for!

‘REMEDIAL’ is a term used to refer to a massage that is catered to a specific injury or ailment, rather than just a general ‘all-over’ massage.
For example, if you’re experiencing lower back pain and tightness that inhibits you from doing things in your day to day life (such as bending down to tie your shoelaces, or pack the dishwasher), or you’re experiencing tightness in a particular area of your body that’s holding you back, then we will focus our treatment to that area.

It’s really common for people to come to us in pain, not knowing if it is something that can simply be treated with massage or if will require Physio rehabilitation. That’s okay! Just pop in and we will help to work it out for you!

Our massage therapist will start you off with a consultation, do a few tests, ask you some questions, and assess your pain to help determine what will be the best treatment for you. (Our Physios do the same thing if you choose to book in with them first. Either way, we’ll point you in the right direction.)
Remedial massage is generally a deep tissue massage, but the pressure can be varied depending on the person.

‘SPORTS’ massage is a style of massage catered to athletes, or any person participating in sports activities/training.
This style of massage can be utilised a few different ways. Some people choose to use it before an event to help prepare their body and enhance their performance, whereas some like to use it after an event to aid in recovery and muscle soreness.
Once again, it is entirely up to you and your lifestyle/needs.
Sports massage is generally a deep tissue massage, but the pressure can be varied depending on the person. Our therapist will cater your treatment and pressure based around your training schedule and the type of event you’re training for.

PREGNANCY MASSAGE.’
A lot of women need massage to alleviate the tightness and pain brought on by pregnancy and their ever-changing weight and body. When all of the baby weight is dispersed to the front of the body, it can cause a lot of stress to the back as it tries to overcompensate for the struggling abdominal muscles.
Pregnancy massage is also beneficial in helping release your muscle tightness to prepare your body for the muscular changes post-pregnancy.

‘CUPPING’ Suction cups are applied to the skin for several minutes to help release tightness as it draws blood flow to the surface.
A lot of people are hesitant to try cupping as they are concerned about bruising. You won’t necessarily bruise, but if you do it’s completely normal. The bruises will highlight which areas are the tightest and are an indicator that the body’s natural healing process of drawing blood to the surface is working.
